District facility study outlines $28.5 million in needed renovations

HARLAN -- The HCS Board of Education heard a presentation from an architectural firm Monday, Aug. 20 on a district facility study that outlines $28.5 million in identified, needed renovations and repairs across the four attendance centers (buildings) in the district.
The findings will be reviewed by the board and further discussion is likely with the possibility of a bond issue floated to district patrons for consideration to fund the renovations.
Matt Erion told board members that for the past five months the firm has been conducting interviews with students, staff and the community, and a number of steering committee meetings have been held to discuss facility improvements in the Harlan Community Schools.
No conclusions have been made as the firm was just charged with doing the study and providing findings to the district for review.  In general, he said the district facilities’ skeleton is in good shape, but renovations are needed, especially to the two oldest buildings -- the high school and intermediate buildings.
