The pilot and only occupant of a small airplane walked away without injury when the plane he was piloting overturned in a field north of the Harlan Airport while attempting to land Wednesday morning, May 16. The Harlan Community jazz program made history this year sending two bands to the Iowa Jazz Championships. The Jazz Experience brought home the state title. An independent investigator has been hired to review these and other claims. Tarah Devlin-Lawler was appointed to the Harlan Community Schools Board of Education following the resignation of Kathy Mahlberg. Devlin-Lawler will serve until November, 2019, the next school election. The funeral processional for Earling Fire Chief Tom Henrich was held October 27 with his casket and fire gear being carried to the church cemetery aboard an Earling fire truck. Henrich died while responding to a combine fire call near Earling October 20. These Harlan Community High School Business Professionals of America students qualified for national competition after top showings at the state competition in the spring. Congratulations to Jack Klitgaard for completing hs Eagle Scout project during the year -- An eagle aerie project. Congratulations to Niall Mahoney for completing his Eagle Scout project during the year -- a little libraries project. Cassidy Robinson was crowned Shelby County Fair Queen July 12. The two runner-up princesses included Allyssa Obrecht (first runner-up, left) and Emily Taggs (second runner-up, right). King Jon Owens and Queen Andrea Ferry were crowned royalty for the Harlan Community High School homecoming festivities in September. This HondaJet made a hard landing at the Harlan Airport in the spring. The jet stayed at the airport until officials from Honda could fix it and get it safe to fly.
