Baseball: Wolves’ upset bid falls short at fourth-ranked Treynor

TREYNOR (June 17) -- Ethan Carter’s fifth-inning, two-run single gave IKM-Manning a brief 2-1 lead at Treynor Monday night, but the fourth-ranked (2A) Cardinals responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning and went on to beat the Wolves 7-2 and complete a sweep of the season series.
IKM-Manning was much more competitive than the first time around - a 17-1 loss in Manilla - but still fell to 3-10 in Western Iowa Conference play and 4-10 overall. Treynor improved to 12-1 in the WIC and 17-3 overall.
Wolves’ freshman pitcher Max Nielsen (0-4) battled his control at times but held the Cardinals largely in check until the fifth. He allowed four hits and four runs in four-plus innings, walking seven and striking out four. Grant Stracke and Carter combined to surrender three runs in two innings of relief.
Alex Lingle went 2-for-4 at the plate for IKM-M, Nolan Ramsey drew two walks and Dane Blom, Carter and Will Jorgensen all singled.
