Cyclone athletes qualify 12 events for state track

HCHS boys place third at 3A state qualifying meet, earn nine state bids; HCHS girls qualify in three events

ATLANTIC (May 10) -- The Harlan Community boys track team will take nine events to state - three more than last year - following a productive night at Thursday’s Class 3A State Qualifying Meet in Atlantic.
The Cyclones qualified seven events automatically by placing first or second and secured two at-large bids based on time. They nearly earned a 10th state event but a third-place 4x100 relay time (45.24) missed the cut-off mark by just .06 of a second.
The HCHS girls squad, which has battled the injury bug seemingly all season, managed to qualify three events for state, highlighted by Chloe Hansen’s personal-best time of 1:06.92 in winning the 400-meter hurdles. Two other events qualified at-large by placing fourth: Madison Schumacher in the shot put (personal-best 36 feet, 3 inches) and the 4x800 relay (season-best 10:10.73).
The Cyclone girls’ third-place sprint medley relay missed qualifying by just .18 of a second.
HCHS will take its combined 12 entries to the 2018 Co-Ed State Track Meet this Thursday-Saturday (May 17-19) at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“Overall, I think we had a pretty good night,” said Cyclone boys head coach Sam Brummer, whose squad placed third out of eight teams with 128 points and scored 25 times in 18 events.
The Cyclone girls, who have had at least five of their top performers limited by leg and foot injuries this spring, placed in 13 events Thursday and finished seventh with 52 points.
