Cyclone baseball team tops Kuemper for 2-0 start

HARLAN (May 22) -- Connor Bruck pitched three stellar innings of relief and Harlan Community plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to hold off the Kuemper Catholic baseball team, 5-2, Tuesday night at Jim Goeser Field.
HCHS, ranked second in Class 3A by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association to start the season, built a 3-0 lead after two innings against Kuemper ace Cole Halbur and overcame an injury to slugging first baseman Ryan Doran to improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. The 3rd-ranked (2A) Knights are now 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
“I think we’ve got a long way to go, but for the first two games we’ll take it,” said Cyclone head coach Steve Daeges, who returns about eight players with starting experience from last year’s 3A runner-up.
Brett Sears (9-1 last year) made his junior season debut on the mound Tuesday and held Kuemper to two runs on six hits over four innings to get the win. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter, but was taxed for 71 pitches after Kuemper scored twice in the fourth.
Bruck, who was initially set to start Thursday’s game at Sioux City North, relieved Sears to start the fifth and picked up a three-inning save. He struck out the first three batters he faced and allowed just one base runner (on an error) in three frames, fanning five.
Eight different Cyclones finished the game with one hit, including doubles by Doran, Nick Foss and Jacob Bartley.
