Cyclone boys golfers suffer close defeats
BREDA (April 26) -- While the scores kept on improving for the Harlan Community boys golf team last week, victory narrowly eluded the Cyclones in three consecutive dual meets on the road.
HCHS opened the week by placing seventh out of nine teams at the Monarch Boys Invitational held April 22 on Denison’s Majestic Hills. The Cyclones scored a 353 overall - 37 strokes behind first-place Glenwood - led by Jay Swanson’s 18-hole round of 83.
The results got better as the week progressed but the Cyclones fell short in duals at Atlantic on Tuesday (165-170), at Clarinda Thursday (160-162) and vs. Kuemper (at the Breda Golf Club) Friday (156-158).
“We lost three duals this week, but were within a couple strokes each night against some very good teams on their home courses,” said HCHS coach Chad Swanson. “That being the case, we are really starting to come around.”
Senior Jay Swanson put together a fantastic week overall with a medalist round of 35 at Atlantic and runner-up medalist scores of 36 against Clarinda and Kuemper. The 35 was his best career dual score for nine holes.
