Cyclone football standouts sign letters of intent

HARLAN (Feb. 7) -- Three highly integral pieces of the Harlan Community football team’s recent 10-2 season inked collegiate letters of intent last Wednesday on national signing day.
Senior Nick Foss, selected as captain of the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Class 3A All-State Team last fall, signed to play for budding NCAA Division II power Minnesota State (Mankato).
Senior Caleb Brouse, also a first-team all-stater, followed in the footsteps of other recent Cyclone graduates by signing with Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, a Division II program as well.
Senior Deren Schmitz, named second-team all-state, signed with NAIA power Morningside College in Sioux City.
All three Cyclone standouts started for at least two seasons on the gridiron and were two-way players last fall as HCHS made its first trip to the state semifinals at the UNI-Dome since 2011. All three are multi-sport athletes and were named to the Hawkeye Ten Conference All-Academic Team.
“We’ve got some big shoes to fill next fall,” said HCHS head coach Curt Bladt, who surpassed 400 career wins in September. “These guys are great in the classroom, they’re great on the field, they’re just good kids. They do all the right things and that’s what’s most important about the whole deal. Now they get the opportunity to go on and grow a little bit and get ready for the next level.”
