Cyclone softball opens with 2-1 home stand

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community softball team opened the season with a 2-1 home stand during the first half of last week, winning close games against Underwood and Kuemper Catholic before losing to Sioux City Heelan in eight innings.
HCHS 4, Underwood 2
 Trailing 2-1 after five and a half innings, the Cyclones put together a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Eagles 4-2 in the May 21 season opener.
 Morgan Schaben pitched a three-hitter for the win, allowing two unearned runs, walking one and striking out 14 Eagles.
 The Cyclones finished with seven hits, led by Schumacher going 2-for-3.
HCHS 7, Kuemper 6
 The Cyclones let an early 5-0 lead slip away but scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and held off the Knights 7-6 in their Hawkeye Ten opener May 22.
 HCHS freshman pitcher Emily Brouse retired the first nine batters she faced (seven on strikeouts) before Kuemper began its rally in the fourth on Cassidy Christensen’s two-out, two-run double. Alli Mertz hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Kamryn Venner’s two-run blast tied the score at six in the top of the sixth.
 The Cyclones responded in the bottom half of the frame when Morgan Schaben led off with a single and courtesy runner Jordan Heese stole second and later scored on a passed ball.
 Schaben earned the win in relief of Brouse, retiring four straight batters with two Ks. Brouse struck out 12 in five and two-thirds, allowing six hits and walking three.
 Schaben finished 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, including run-scoring doubles in each of the first two innings. Kate Heithoff (3-for-4) had RBI singles in the second and fifth while Brouse (2-for-4) singled home a run in the third to make it 5-0.
Heelan 3, HCHS 1 (8)
 Aubrey Wolf’s two-run homer in the top of the eighth lifted Bishop Heelan to a 3-1 win over HCHS May 23 at H. Jack Field.
 With the international rule used in extra innings, Heelan started the eighth with a runner on second and one out later Wolf’s long ball proved to be the game winner for the 2-0 Crusaders.
 The Cyclones scored their only run in the first when Molly Gubbels led off with a double and scored on Morgan Schaben’s single.
 Schaben (2-1) took the hard-luck defeat, racking up 14 strikeouts in eight frames while allowing six hits and one walk.
