Cyclones put up a fight in loss to top-ranked Kuemper
CARROLL (Sept. 11) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team got swept Tuesday night, but not without challenging top-ranked (3A) Kuemper Catholic in all three sets of a 20-25, 21-25, 18-25 Hawkeye Ten defeat.
Just three days after losing to the Knights 11-21, 9-21 in the South Central Calhoun Tournament, HCHS showed a lot more fight in Kuemper’s home gym.
Set one was tied 19-all before the Knights scored six of the last seven points. The Cyclones then fell behind 10-1 in set two but charged back within 18-17. Kuemper once again finished strong and did the same in set three three, which was tied 15-15.
The Knights (16-0 overall, 4-0 H-10) finished with a lofty 41-19 advantage in kills while the Cyclones (7-8, 1-2) had a few less serving and attack errors overall.
HCHS head coach Willie Baughman noted that Tuesday’s performance was his team’s best of the year so far.
Kuemper, which has yet to drop a set this season, was led by Kara Peter’s 14 kills (.565 efficiency) and four aces. Aimee Adams added 12 kills (.206) and Mallory Badding put up 18 digs.
