Denison halts seven-year volleyball drought vs. HCHS

HARLAN (Aug. 28) -- The same woes that plagued Harlan Community down the stretch of the Cyclone Volleyball Tournament last Saturday were present once again during Tuesday’s Hawkeye Ten opener with Denison-Schleswig.
And while HCHS nearly rallied late to force a fifth set, too many unforced errors and passing struggles ultimately led to a 3-1 loss to the Monarchs - 16-25, 25-18, 19-25, 23-25.
Trailing 24-20 in set four, the Cyclones fought back to within a point on Hayley Hopkins’ team-leading ninth kill, but after a D-S timeout, Olivia Petersen’s deep serve sailed just long and the Monarchs celebrated their first win over Harlan since 2010.
HCHS is now 3-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Denison improved to 3-2 and 1-0, respectively.
Denison finished with eight more ace serves than the Cyclones (13-5) and had four more kills (33-29) with a better efficiency (.147 to .017).
Denison coach McKenzie (Moore) Mich, who spiked a team-high 343 kills as a Cyclone senior in 2006, is in her sixth year at the helm of the Monarch volleyball program. Mich’s previous five squads had yet to take a set against her alma mater in five matches.
For HCHS, Hopkins’ nine kills were followed by Anna Ahrenholtz with seven, Macie Leinen five and Jandy Petersen four. The team’s only kill efficiency above zero was Hopkins’ mark of .154.
