Foss opens senior year with Dan Hill Invite title

Returning Cyclone state medalist outlasts Rams’ Carter in 195-pound final; HCHS places sixth as a team

HARLAN (Dec. 2) -- Nick Foss has every intention to improve on last season’s fifth-place medal at the State Wrestling Tournament.
If Saturday was any indication, Harlan Community’s senior 195-pounder is poised for a memorable last go-around on the mats.
Following up two first-period pins with a hard-fought 15-8 decision over Glenwood’s Noah Carter in the finals, Foss claimed his first Dan Hill Invitational championship to highlight the team’s annual season opener.
Foss had placed third in each of the last two Cyclone home tournaments (182 pounds last year and 145 in 2015), but made the most of his first trip to the finals.
“It feels good. A lot of teams don’t have an invitational, so it’s nice to be able to do it in front of our own crowd and community,” said Foss, who is hoping to cap his career with a state title in February. “I think (this) should set the tone. I’ll keep working really hard and everything should work out well.”
Foss was one of eight Cyclone medalists Saturday as HCHS finished sixth out of 10 teams with 109 points. Ethan Lemon (120 pounds) and Carter Bendorf (160) both placed third while Joey Arkfeld (220) and Daniel Soll (285) placed fourth for the Cyclones.
Gretna, paced by six individual champs, defended its Dan Hill team title with 252 points, followed by Glenwood (239, 3 champs), Winterset (187, 2 champs), Logan-Magnolia (178) and West Central Valley (121). Six of last year’s individual champions were able to repeat on Saturday.
