Hargens-led Rebels top Wolves in battle for district lead

IKM-M must win and get help to make playoffs

MANNING (Oct. 12) -- The IKM-Manning defense kept it a one-score game for two and a half quarters Friday night, but never found the answer to slow down bruising Sioux Central running back Ben Hargens.
Carrying the ball 46 times for 282 yards on a wet field, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior scored three touchdowns to anchor the Rebels’ power-rushing attack in a 26-7 win over the Wolves at Forman Field.
In a battle for first place in Class A, District 2, Sioux Central outgained IKM-M 374-142 - attempting only two passes in 67 plays - and held the Wolves scoreless until the final 2:17.
IKM-Manning had some success with the passing game late but netted just 23 yards on 31 rushing attempts and turned the ball over three times in the second half as it tried to rally from an 8-0 halftime deficit.
“We needed to win the line of scrimmage a few times and we just didn’t win it enough on either side of the ball,” said IKM-M coach Tom Casey.
Playoff picture:
IKM-Manning (5-3 overall, 3-1 in District 2) now faces a tough road to make the playoffs given that its RPI score of .5532 currently ranks 21st in Class A.
The Wolves must first win their regular-season finale at Ridge View (2-6, 2-2) Friday night, then hope that Alta-Aurelia (6-2, 3-1) beats Sioux Central (7-1, 4-0) to force a three-way tie for first place in District 2. If this happens, all three teams would likely be assured of making the 16-team playoff field.
