HCHS blanks Creston 3-0 for 12th shutout win
CRESTON (May 14) -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team notched its 12th shutout of the year and locked up second place in the Hawkeye Ten Conference standings Monday night with a 3-0 win at Creston.
Tanner Fink, Cole Kramer and Aaron Wollaston each scored a goal for the fifth-ranked (2A) Cyclones, who improved to 14-1 overall and finished 6-1 in the H-10 with their second 3-0 decision this year over Creston.
The Panthers dropped to 7-7 overall and 1-5 in league play.
The game was scoreless until Fink’s header goal - off a Michael Heithoff assist - with 11:47 left in the first half. Kramer scored about nine minutes into the second half before Wollaston capped the scoring with 12:09 to play. Andres Cavalieri and Rolly Lokange had the second-half assists.
HCHS took 38 total shots and 22 shots on goal compared to Creston’s three and one, respectively. The Cyclones also finished with an 11-2 advantage on corner kicks.
HCHS earns substate bye
The Cyclones have earned the top seed in Class 2A, Substate 8 and will receive a first-round bye on Monday, May 21. However, there are still two games scheduled at Merrill Field as Perry will face Carlisle at 5:00 p.m., followed by Glenwood vs. Carroll.
HCHS will face the Glenwood-Carroll winner on Wednesday (May 23) at Merrill Field, with game time set for 6:30. Winterset/Earlham, ranked sixth, will host either Perry or Carlisle on Wednesday at 4:00.
The Substate 8 final will be played in Harlan on Saturday, May 26, at noon.
