HCHS-Heelan rematch set for Class 3-A semifinals

DES MOINES (July 27) -- Harlan Community and Sioux City Bishop Heelan won’t need a formal introduction when the two teams get together for Friday’s 11 a.m. Class 3-A semifinal at the 2017 State Baseball Tournament.
The number two and three seeds in this year’s 3-A state bracket, the top-ranked Cyclones (35-2) and 8th-ranked Crusaders (32-12) will be meeting for the fourth time in the last two years, including twice at Principal Park.
HCHS, which has won the last four meetings since a 12-1 loss in May of 2013, beat Heelan 8-6 in last year’s opening round at state, holding off a four-run Crusader rally in the seventh inning. The Cyclones also won 8-7 earlier this summer (May 26) when Ryan Doran ripped a walk-off RBI single at Jim Goeser Field.
Both teams are in the state tournament field for the 17th time and have combined to win 33 tourney games and five state championships, most recently Harlan’s 3-A title last season.
Friday’s winner will have a shot at another top prize, facing either top-seeded Davenport Assumption (39-5) or fourth-seeded Dubuque Wahlert (27-15) in Saturday’s 3-A championship game at 5:00 p.m.
