HCHS softball takes game one of two vs. Rams behind Hopkins five-hitter

GLENWOOD -- Harlan Community split a varsity softball doubleheader at Glenwood on Thursday, winning the first game 2-1 before dropping the night cap 15-8.
The game-one victory snapped a three-game slide for the Cyclones, who finished the night at 7-9 overall and 5-6 in the Hawkeye Ten. The Rams moved to 10-6 and 7-4, respectively.
In game one, HCHS scored both of its runs in the first inning and held on for the win as Hayley Hopkins pitched a five-hitter with no walks. The Cyclones fell behind 12-0 after two innings in game two, but kept fighting back and extended the game to seven full innings, even pulling within 13-8 in the sixth.

The Cyclones’ two-run first inning in game one saw five of the first six batters reach safely, although two were thrown out on the bases either trying to steal or trying to score on a ground ball. Emily Juhl and Delaney Kelly, who both singled, scored the two runs on a passed ball and an Anna Ahrenholtz RBI single.

The Rams took control of the second game in the first two innings, using a combined eight hits and six walks to score seven runs in the first and five more in the second.
The Cyclones, however, refused to let the game end early and flustered the Rams with some aggressive base running, scoring three in the third, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to make things interesting.
