HCHS trio completes season with CB Swim Team

COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Harlan Community junior Aubri Smith and freshmen Aurora Miller and Elaina Vrchoticky recently completed their first season competing for the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln girls swimming team, also known as the CB Swim Team.
The team was coached by Harlan Community alum Logan Maxwell, a 7th grade social studies teacher at Kirn Junior High in Council Bluffs, and consisted of athletes from Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, HCHS, Underwood and Tri-Center. Home meets were held at the Kirn Junior High swimming pool.
A late-season highlight for the Lynx involved Smith and Miller, who were members of the 200 freestyle relay at the the regional meet in Johnston. The team cut 7.5 seconds off its season-best time and missed qualifying for state by less than half a second.
Vrchoticky was unable to compete at regionals due to an injury that caused her to miss the second half of the season.
“The season went incredibly well for us,” Maxwell said. “Regionals was a highlight, especially with our 200 freestyle relay team. They were seeded at a pace that would have been around eight seconds short of them qualifying for the state meet. The team was so incredibly young; only two girls had ever swam at a regional meet before. To have a team with three freshmen and one junior step up to the plate, drop the time they needed and only miss out on state by less than a second is incredible. It gives us motivation to work for next year.”
