Lady Vikes top Cyclones for first time in girls soccer

AVOCA (May 8) -- As the AHSTW girls soccer team continues to progress in its sixth year as a program, one team the Lady Vikes had yet to beat was Harlan Community.
That distinction changed on Tuesday night as AHSTW held the Cyclone girls to just two shots on goal and scored a 2-0 victory in Avoca.
Katie Anzalone’s free kick goal from about 25 yards out put the Lady Vikes on top in the eighth minute of play and Jordyn Holtz added a short goal off the left post in the second half to provide insurance.
A free kick by HCHS senior Kylee Hinz missed just high off the crossbar in the 56th minute and AHSTW held on for its fourth shutout of the season, improving to 6-3 overall and beating the Cyclones for the first time in six tries. HCHS won last year’s meeting in Harlan 6-1.
The Lady Vikes also set a new school record for wins in a season with four regular season games remaining.
The Cyclones, who fell to 1-9 overall, outpossessed the Lady Vikes during several stretches of play but again struggled to turn scoring opportunities into goals.

COUNCIL BLUFFS (May 7) -- The Cyclones were defeated 9-0 at Thomas Jefferson on Monday night as Sawyer Elliff scored five goals and Josephine Starner also had a hat trick for the 8-3 Yellow Jackets.
Dani Arkfeld attempted the lone shot on goal for the Cyclones and Makenzie Jones finished with 18 saves.
