Lemon, Foss crowned Hawkeye Ten champs

Talented HCHS duo earn conference wrestling titles at 120 and 195; Cyclones place 6th as a team

COUNCIL BLUFFS (Jan. 27) -- As expected, Harlan Community senior Nick Foss won the 195-pound championship during Saturday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Wrestling Tournament at Lewis Central.
Claiming his first conference title in dominating fashion was a great achievement for Foss (ranked third in Class 2A), but afterward he was more interested in talking about the Cyclones’ other individual champ - sophomore 120-pounder Ethan Lemon.
The unranked Lemon, seeded second in his bracket and still recovering from an illness that forced him to miss two days of practice earlier in the week, went 3-0 on Saturday, capped by a 4-1 decision over top-seeded Steele McLaren of Atlantic in the finals. McLaren had pinned Lemon in their dual encounter on January 4, but Lemon was so focused on accomplishing his mission that he didn’t remember facing McLaren.
“I thought that was great for him,” Foss said of Lemon’s H-10 championship. “Sometimes he’s just independent and kind of sheltered...and sometimes that helps him because he doesn’t know like, ‘This guy is supposed to be good or that guy is supposed to good.’ He goes out there and he wrestles his match every time. If more people could do that, they would have a lot of success I think."
As a team, HCHS scored 117 points and placed sixth in the 11-team field, matching last year’s finish. Glenwood won its first Hawkeye Ten title since 2006 with 237.5 points, followed by Creston/O-M (201), Lewis Central (195), Atlantic (176.5) and Red Oak (129).
In addition to Lemon and Foss, Cyclone place-winners included Lucas Carter (3rd at 132), Oscar Olmos (4th at 145), Daniel Soll (4th at 285), Dalton McKinley (5th at 126), Arkfeld (5th at 220) and Bendorf (6th at 160).
