MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

HCHS girls, Gross qualify for state cross country

GLENWOOD (Oct. 18) -- For the first time in three years, Harlan Community cross country coach Doug Renkly will be taking a full squad of runners to the state meet in Fort Dodge. And they won’t be alone.
Fully living up to expectations on a warm afternoon at Glenwood Lake Park, the HCHS girls placed first as a team and Cyclone sophomore Trey Gross placed sixth individually in Thursday’s Class 3A State Qualifying Meet, punching their respective tickets to this Saturday’s State Cross Country Championships in Fort Dodge.
One week after edging Glenwood by a point for the Hawkeye Ten Conference Meet title, the Cyclone girls extended their winning margin to 12 on the same course with a first-place 58. The host Rams, along with Atlantic, both scored a 70 and also advanced to state as a team.
HCHS senior Greichaly Kaster, who will be competing in her fourth state meet - but just her second as part of a team - said this year’s trip to Fort Dodge will be the sweetest of the four.
“This is such a great group of girls and we’ve worked so hard for this,” she said.
Gross, last week’s H-10 boys individual champ, ran with the front pack for about half of Thursday’s five-kilometer race before settling back with a secondary group of runners and easily finishing among the top 15 state qualifiers with a time of 17:03.99. The Cyclone sophomore will be making his first trip to the state meet after placing 30th at last year’s SQM.
“It feels great. It feels amazing,” Gross said. “I didn’t have my best race today, but I’m so glad that I qualified for state.”

Thursday’s three boys state-qualifying teams were top-ranked Gilbert with an impressive score of 32 (six runners in the top 12), followed by Atlantic (87) and Glenwood (89). ADM placed fourth with a 112 and the HCHS boys took fifth out of 12 teams with a 137.
Individual champs were Janette Schraft of Glenwood, who finished in 18:42 to beat Atlantic’s Taylor McCreedy by 32 seconds, and top-ranked Rees Tyler of Gilbert (16:21).
The Cyclone girls were paced by the consistent duo of freshman Kaia Bieker (6th place, 20:18) and Kaster (7th place, 20:23).
