Murtaugh passes 300 wins as Cyclones sweep quad

HARLAN -- It’s possible that only a handful of people in the Harlan Community gymnasium knew the significance of the Cyclones’ three victories Tuesday night for head coach John Murtaugh.
No announcements, no in-meet recogniton; and that was perfectly fine with Murtaugh, who was most pleased by his team putting on a good show for the home fans. Make no mistake about it, though, this was a special night for the program’s 13th-year mentor.
When HCHS opened Tuesday’s quadrangular meet with a 66-12 rout of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, it marked career dual win number 300 for Murtaugh, who started his coaching career in Wayne, Nebraska. The Cyclones followed it up by defeating Underwood, 49-20, and Shenandoah, 57-19, boosting Murtaugh’s career dual record to 302-150. His winning percentage is almost identical in Harlan as HCHS has gone 214-106 since Murtaugh took the job in 2003-2004.
