Sears hustles Cyclones past Kuemper Catholic, 5-4

CARROLL -- On a night when Harlan Community matched a season high by striking out eight times, it was a swing-and-a-miss that set the stage for the winning run to score on some savvy base running by Dillon Sears.
With HCHS and Kuemper Catholic tied 4-4 in the top of the seventh on Tuesday, Sears ignited the go-ahead rally with a one-out double to right-center field. Moments later, he scampered from second to home on a dropped third strike in the dirt, giving the Cyclones the run they needed to outlast an improved Knights baseball team, 5-4, at Merchants Park.
Josh Cheek worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh to earn his first save of the year in relief of Brett Sears (3-0), who pitched a season-high six innings for the win.
The second-ranked (3-A) Cyclones improved to 10-1 overall and 9-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play, still one game back of Lewis Central in the league standings.
Kuemper, which lost 17-5 in last month’s season opener at Harlan, saw its records fall to 9-8 overall and 6-5 (H-10) after losing for just the second time in its last eight games.
