Spartan girls knock off sixth-ranked Cougars, 58-55

ELK HORN (Jan. 28) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton girls followed up their most disappointing loss of the season last Friday with arguably their most impressive win on Monday night, rallying past CAM 58-55 to hand the sixth-ranked (1A) Cougars just their second loss of the season.
The Spartans trailed by seven points entering the fourth quarter, then outscored CAM 18-10 the rest of the way to bounce back nicely from last Friday’s 59-47 loss at Paton-Churdan.
Sophomore guard Tatum Grubbs led Exira-EHK with 24 points on Monday, including 8-of-12 free throws. Freshman Macy Emgarten finished with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds while senior Leslie Caniglia gave the Spartans a second double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Emgarten hit three 3-pointers on the night and Grubbs added a pair.
The Cougars, who won the first meeting with E-EHK 64-53 in December, were led by Madison Gettler’s 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Exira-EHK, now 14-5 overall and 11-3 in the Rolling Valley Conference, still trails CAM (14-2, 11-2) by a half-game in the league standings with just two games left in the regular season.
