Spurtability carries Cyclones past Monarchs, 70-49

Runs of 10-1, 21-1 lift HCHS to 3-0

HARLAN (Dec. 8) -- Turning a close game into a rout with two key runs, the Harlan Community boys basketball team improved to 3-0 here Friday night with 70-49 non-conference win over Denison-Schleswig.
Leading 25-19 late in the second quarter, HCHS closed the first half on a 10-1 run, then put together a 21-1 second-half spurt after D-S scored the first four points of the third quarter.
Brett Sears’ third driving three-point play of the night put the Cyclones up 56-25 at the start of the fourth - a lead the Monarchs later sliced to 16 points against Cyclone reserves to make the final score look more respectable.
“We were making the extra pass,” said HCHS coach Mitch Osborn. “We forced a few shots but we’re getting better. It’s still early. We’ve got a long home stand so we’ve got to take advantage of our home court right now because January is going to be a bear... I’m very pleased.”
By game’s end 11 Cyclones had scored, led by Shane Chamberlain’s 16 points, 15 from Sears and 10 by Logan Klaassen. Moser, Hunter Manz and Deren Schmitz added nine, six and five points, respectively, and Schmitz grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
