Talented Cardinals knock out Cyclone girls, 5-0

HCHS plays well in regional semifinal loss to fifth-ranked foe, finishes first winning season in five years

TREYNOR (May 31) -- The Harlan Community girls played a sound 80 minutes of soccer for the most part Friday night. Fifth-ranked Treynor was just better, scoring three first-half goals and beating the Cyclones 5-0 in a Class 1A, Region 2 semifinal.
The Cardinals, now 12-2, suffered their only losses on April 6 to Spencer and Sioux City Heelan and have only allowed two goals since in winning 10 straight games. They hosted No. 10 St. Albert (13-7) in Monday’s regional final. The Cyclones finished 10-8 overall for their first winning season in five years.
“I’m just proud of how they played. They didn’t quit,” said HCHS head coach Jared Boysen. “We could have quit at 2-0 or 3-0 and they kept (trying) and finished with a great season. It’s hard to finish this way with a loss but I thought we played as well as we could.”
Treynor junior Rylie Jacobsen scored two goals while Rachel Kinsella, Livia White and Rachael Phelps added one each. The Cardinals finished with a 25-6 advantage in total shots (13-4 shots on goal) and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks, showcasing an abundance of high-skill players.
“They’re well rounded,” Boysen said. “They all can control the ball. They all can kick it all the way across the field. Their defense is tough.
“We tried to shut down their best player [Alyssa Kellar] and she didn’t score. She had their most goals [25] on the season and we tried to lock her up and not give her any opportunities, but they had so many more options."
The Cyclones’ best two scoring chances occurred about two minutes apart in the 26th and 28th minutes. First, Anna Shelton’s long free kick was solid and on target, but saved by Treynor goalie Callie Copperstone. HCHS freshman Kaia Bieker then pulled away from her defender on a breakaway down the left hash, but just as she pulled the trigger on a shot Copperstone slid at her feet and deflected the ball, then chased it down in front of the net.
Boysen praised the back line defensive play of Kara Weis, Shelton and Madison Parman for helping to limit the Cardinals’ scoring after they put 19 in the net in one half of play vs. Riverside last Tuesday. Musich finished with eight saves while Shelton and Raegen Wicks tied for the team lead with two shots.
The Cyclones, who went just 3-15 last year, have now put together three winning seasons in seven years under Boysen, going 11-8 in 2013, 10-8 in 2014 and 10-8 again this spring.
