Underwood rallies past Lady Vikes, 6-3

AHSTW will lose one senior from 8-15 squad

UNDERWOOD (July 3) -- AHSTW got the start it wanted last Tuesday, but was unable to finish in a Class 2A regional softball quarterfinal game at Underwood.
Trailing 3-0 at the halfway point, the host Eagles tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and added three unearned runs in the fifth to end the Lady Vikes’ season 6-3.
Underwood improved to 16-8 and advanced to Friday night’s Region 2 semifinal at No. 8 Logan-Magnolia, where it was defeated 9-4.
The Lady Vikes, whose season included a late-June head coaching change, finished 8-15 overall and will lose just one senior in first baseman Sarah Butcher.
“They’re a great group of girls and it’s been fun to (work) with them for two years,” said AHSTW coach Ashley Bargman, who is leaving the school district and moving to Cedar Falls. “We know the athleticism is there... and it’s going to show in the next few years.”
The Lady Vikes hit the ball well against Underwood starter Jozie Sudmann, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding a third run in the fourth. Madison Heiny delivered a two-run single early and Katie Anzalone’s RBI single made it 3-0.
Sudmann allowed seven hits in three and two-thirds innings before freshman Ella Pierce provided an effective change of pace in relief, surrendering just three singles over the final three and a third.
AHSTW outhit the Eagles 10-8 overall, led by three hits from Paige Osweiler and two hits by Heiny. Pitcher Ally Meyers (8-13) allowed eight hits and six runs (three earned) in her six innings of work.
