Vikings shut out Knights 8-0 in district opener

AVOCA (July 13) -- A five-run first inning provided more than enough support for junior pitcher Clayton Akers here Saturday night as AHSTW opened the Class 1A district baseball tournament with an 8-0 quarterfinal victory over Fremont-Mills.
Akers (4-3) pitched six scoreless innings in just 63 pitches, allowing five hits, walking none and striking out four. Sam Porter pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.
“Clayton Akers did a very good job of throwing strikes,” said AHSTW head coach Jason Holst. “We got a couple of great defensive plays from second baseman Gabe Madsen. He started two double plays that impeded threats by the Knights."
Madsen went 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases to lead the AHSTW offense. Blake Holst and Joey Cunningham both had two hits, two runs and two steals, with Holst adding two RBI as well. Brody Langer, Akers and Joey Goins each added a single and a run scored.
The Vikings improved to 12-11 with their fifth straight win and will now play at St. Albert (22-13) in a Class 1A, District 14 semifinal on Tuesday.
