Weyer signs with SMSU Mustangs

HARLAN -- Harlan Community senior Derec Weyer signed a national letter of intent on February 6 to play football at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota.
Weyer earned second-team All-District 9 honors as an offensive lineman last fall - starting at left tackle - and was also part of the Cyclones’ rotation at defensive tackle as the team finished 8-3 overall and advanced to the Class 3A playoff quarterfinals. Weyer provided run blocking and pass protection for a potent offense that averaged 35 points and 375 total yards per game. On defense, he totaled eight solo tackles and 26 assists, including two tackles for loss. The 6’5”, 295-pound Weyer started at tight end for the Cyclones’ 2017 playoff semifinal team, catching four passes for 41 yards, while making 40 tackles (3.5 sacks) on defense.
Weyer was the Class 2A heavyweight runner-up at this year’s State Wrestling Tournament and also competes in track and baseball for HCHS.
