Harlan Fire Dept. says check your smoke detectors this month --

Hear the Beep Where You Sleep, theme for fire prevention week

HARLAN – Fire Prevention Week is October 4-10, under the theme this year “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep.  Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!”
Location matters when it comes to a smoke alarm.  Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, the Harlan Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) this week to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in every bedroom.
Also, working alarms should be outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
“It’s a fire, seconds count,” said Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen.  “Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep.  Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.”
