Allyn Laverne Bartelson, 85

July 5, 1937 - March 10, 2023

Allyn Laverne Bartelson, age 85, son of Ronald and Cecil (McDowell) Bartelson, was born July 5, 1937, at the Harlan Hospital and died Friday, March 10, 2023, at home on the family farm near Irwin, Iowa. He had been in treatment for multiple types of cancer for several years and was under hospice care the last week.
Allyn went to Country School Polk Center No. 5 through the 8th grade. He graduated from Harlan High School in 1955. He played football his last two years of high school. He worked several jobs until becoming a full-time farmer in 1959: worked at home on the farm; picked corn for the Harlan cannery; worked at the Harlan Farm Service Coop gas station; and drove truck hauling fertilizer, lime and crushed rock for Lee Lytle, his uncle. Allyn often commented he had backed the sand truck down every oiled road in Shelby County.
On August 30, 1959, Allyn married Beverly Jean Pries at the United Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa and farmed until 2008, when he retired due to ill health. Allyn never moved far from his family farm home 4 miles south and 4 miles east of Irwin. After marrying, the family lived ¼ mile north on the next farm. In 1988, they moved back to the original farm to look after his widowed mother, living there in a mobile home until 2000, when they moved into Ronald and Cecil’s home on the farm site.
Allyn was a member of the Shelby County Pork Producers, Shelby County Farm Bureau, and the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed supporting his girls in all their various activities, stock car races at several Iowa tracks, NASCAR races in Kansas City, camping at the Iowa State Fair, Spencer Fair, and Lake View, and attending local high school football and basketball games. Allyn spent many enjoyable hours visiting with people who gathered at Grabill’s Bean Shed, the Irwin Elevator, and Burger King. He enjoyed family summer camping trips, many times visiting extended family along the way. For over 40 years, Allyn and Bev were in a Card Party: a group of families who met in their homes. The parents played Pinochle and visited while the kids played together and got into mischief. The Card Party couples serve as Allyn’s honorary casket bearers.
Preceding him in death were his daughter, Julie (Bartelson) Reese; his parents, Ronald and Cecil; his parents-in-law, Otto and Mary Pries; his brother, Jim Bartelson; and his brothers-in-law, Leon Nelson, Otto Pries and Paul Getzschman.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Bartelson; his daughters, Linda Player of Olathe, KS and Peggy (Derrick) Barker of Marshalltown, IA; his son-in-law, Larry Reese of Olathe, KS; his sister, Carol Nelson of Batavia, IA; his sisters-in-law, Luella Bartelson of Anita, IA and Lois Getzschman of Lincoln, NE; his grandchildren, Michaela Player of Westminster, CO, Samantha (Austin) Cline of Olathe, KS, Linnea (Sam) Heidrick of Warrensburg, MO, and Hannah Reese of Olathe, KS; his step-grandchild, Ashlee (Corey) Stupp of Marshalltown, IA; his great-grandchild, Elliott Allyn Cline; his step great-grandchildren, Zander and Emma Stupp; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
