Richard “Dick Burton Joy, 89

January 9, 1933- January 2, 2023

Richard “Dick” Burton Joy, 89, of Harlan, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Elm Crest nursing home on January 2, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones. Richard was born on January 9, 1933 in Logan, Iowa, the son of Everett and Esta (Baldwin) Joy.  Raised in and around Logan, he graduated with the class of 1950 from Logan High School.  He then enlisted and served in the United States Coast Guard from 1951-54, where he was able to experience life on both coasts during his training and service.
Richard, or as his grandkids affectionately called him, Papa Joy, returned to Logan post service where he married Marilyn Ann Sprinkle on October 5, 1957 in Logan, Iowa.  Unto that union, four children were born (Laurie, Amy, Michael, Mary).  They made their home in Harlan, Iowa, where he worked for over 50 years at the Harlan Newspaper as a printer, production manager, and any number of other duties.  When not working, you could often find him tinkering away in the garage or basement fixing old electronics.  After retirement (when it finally took), you could often find him taking his grandkids to the park or socializing at one of the casinos.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marilyn, and daughter Laurie Culp.  He is survived by his children Amy (Don) Christian of Scranton, IA; Michael (Lynn) Joy of Shenandoah, IA; and Mary Joy, Tonganoxie, KS; seven grandchildren: Zachary Culp of Urbandale, IA, Lily and Lucas Christian of Scranton, IA, Addison and Olivia Joy of Shenandoah, IA, and Evelyn and Ellie Palermo of Tonganoxie, KS; his brother Larry (Leona) Joy of Missouri Valley, IA; and innumerable other family members, friends, and colleagues
