AHSTW tops Big Reds for third straight win

AVOCA (June 23) -- AHSTW set the tone with a three-run first inning Tuesday night and went on to beat Missouri Valley 5-2 in Western Iowa Conference baseball action.
The Vikings’ third win in a row improved their record to 3-1 (all WIC games) while the Big Reds fell to 0-4 in the WIC and 0-5 overall.
AHSTW senior pitcher Joey Cunningham allowed two unearned runs in the top of the second but was otherwise in control in his five innings on the mound. He gave up six hits, walked one and struck out four. Sam Porter pitched the final two innings for the save, allowing 1 hit and no runs, striking out four and hitting one batter.
“It was a great team win as every person in the lineup contributed to the offense, defense, or both,” stated AHSTW coach Jason Holst.
Joel Sampson ignited the Vikings’ three-run first with a one-out single and promptly stole second and third base. Porter hit an RBI double, Blake Holst roped a two-out RBI triple and Cunningham’s pop fly single made it 3-0.
Porter, Holst and Cunningham (2 RBI) all finished with two hits and Joey Goins doubled and scored a run to lead the offense.
