Alburnett outlasts T-C in 1A state quarterfinal

CARROLL (July 26) -- Tri-Center fought back gamely on multiple occasions Monday night but ultimately fell two runs short, losing to Alburnett 8-6 in a Class 1A State Baseball Tournament quarterfinal held at Merchants Park.
The third-seeded Trojans closed an outstanding season with an overall record of 28-3 while the sixth-seeded Pirates (29-9) moved on to the semifinal round and lost to St. Albert 10-0 on Wednesday.
Number-three batter Reed Stallman had a huge night for Alburnett vs. T-C, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and six RBI. His three-run homer in the fifth put the Pirates up 6-2 after the Trojans had just pulled within a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Tri-Center put together three two-run innings - making the score 3-2 in the fourth, 6-4 in the fifth and 8-6 in the seventh - but never led.
The Trojans were charged with four errors in the game, leading to a pair of Pirate unearned runs, but they also turned three double plays defensively.
Tri-Center finished with nine hits, including two singles each by Mason Rohatsch and Trent Kozeal. Brett McGee hit a double, Kozeal scored two runs and Kaden McDermott had a single and two RBI.
T-C senior Leyton Nelson (10-1) took his first loss of the year on the mound, allowing nine hits and five earned runs while battling through six innings. Rohatsch worked the seventh in relief, giving up two runs (one earned).
Kale Rose (11-3) earned the win for Alburnett, surrendering seven hits and four runs (two earned) in four and one-third innings. Rose walked one and struck out seven.
Leadoff man Hunter Caves set the table for the Pirates, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Gavin Soukup added two hits and scored twice.
Tri-Center was making its sixth state baseball tourney appearance all-time, including three trips in the last six years. The Trojans won the Class 2A state championship in 1987.
