Area track teams open indoor season at Buena Vista

Klein wins 200-meter dash for HCHS boys; IKM-Manning’s Shyanne Sporrer takes gold in 800-meter run

 STORM LAKE -- Three area track teams opened their indoor season this past weekend by competing at the BVU High School Elite indoor meets held at the Dennis Young Indoor Track at Buena Vista University. Harlan Community and AHSTW participated at Friday’s meet while IKM-Manning went to Saturday’s meet.
 The HCHS girls placed in the top 10 at least once in nine events while the HCHS boys had eight ‘Top 10 events, including a gold medal by Marcus Klein in the 200-meter dash. Klein clocked a time of 23.38 seconds to best a field of 41 runners and also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 7.5 inches.
 The Cyclone boys performed well in the field events, also getting a second-place toss of 50 feet, four inches from Jon Bieker in the shot put. It was the team’s first 50-foot throw since Joe Brummer went 50-8 in 2011. Dylan Ferguson (7th) and Curtis Schnack (8th) also placed high in the shot put while Levi Preston placed fourth in the 400-meter dash. Klein, Preston, Will Lansman and Caleb Rasmussen placed third in the 4x200 relay and HCHS placed fifth in the 4x400.
 The Cyclone girls placed second in two events - Allison Bruck in the 60-meter hurdles and the 4x200 relay of Bruck, Alyssa Sotelo, Chloe Hansen and Lexi Larsen. Hansen added a sixth-place effort in the 60-meter hurdles, Baylee Hoegh placed ninth in the 400 and Jenny Weisenborn was ninth in the shot put.
