Carroll stuns Cyclone boys in overtime district final

HCHS gives up eight-point lead in final 4:30 of regulation, loses 58-57 to 8-14 Tigers

DENISON -- Thursday’s Class 3-A, District 1 final dealt a harsh case of déjà vu at the Harlan Community boys basketball team.
For the second straight year, the Cyclones’ season ended abruptly in the district finals with an overtime loss to a sub-.500 team. And just like last year, HCHS let an eight-point fourth-quarter lead slip away and was unable to take advantage of having the last shot of regulation.
Carroll’s brother combo of Cooper and Dayton Ross took over the game both offensively and defensively down the stretch, spurring a 9-1 fourth-quarter finish and leading the Tigers to a 58-57 OT upset of the fifth-ranked Cyclones at Denison.
Cooper Ross, a 5-foot-7 sophomore guard, scored 13 of Carroll’s last 17 points, including the go-ahead free throw with :06.5 remaining. HCHS was unable to get off a clean shot as time expired.
The Tigers (9-14) advanced to Monday’s Substate 1 final vs. fourth-ranked MOC-Floyd Valley (20-3), which easily knocked out Bishop Heelan, 77-59, in District 2.
HCHS, which beat Carroll 65-49 just one week earlier, finished 19-4.
