Cyclone boys start season with pair of 1-0 wins

Early goals by Blackman, Knudson help HCHS hold off Treynor and Underwood in the cold

HARLAN -- For the second time in as many games, the Harlan Community boys soccer team scored an early goal and made it stand here Friday night, beating Underwood 1-0 at Merrill Field.
The Cyclones opened the season with a 1-0 victory at Treynor in windy and damp conditions Thursday - scoring the only goal just 14 seconds into the match - then used a goal in the fourth minute to top the 13th-ranked (Class 1-A) Eagles on another cold, windy night with occasional snow flurries.
Ethan Knudson scored Friday’s Cyclone goal at the 36:13 mark of the first half, rushing the net for a tap-in shot as the Eagle goalie was unable to gain control of Alex Assmann’s shot from the left side.
Knudson’s score held up the rest of the way as sophomore goalie Keaton Jones saved eight shots on goal and the Cyclone defenders did a good job of preventing many clean attacks by the Eagles, who return many players from last year’s 14-3 campaign.

HCHS 1, Treynor 0
TREYNOR -- Richard Blackman’s goal just 14 seconds into the match provided the lone score Thursday as the Cyclones opened the season with a 1-0 win at Treynor.
