Cyclone girls finish second in meet; boys finish fourth

HCHS Girls

The HCHS girls track and field team put on a strong showing during the Carroll Early Bird event, finishing second place with 105 points, 32 behind first place finishing Glenwood.

“We had such a beautiful night for our first outdoor track meet,” said Cyclone Head Coach Jenny Hamilton. “It was good for us to see local competition and how we match up.”

In field events, multiple Cyclones finished in the top 10, including Aubree Wegner with a fifth place finish in high jump with 4’8”, Josie Sonderman coming in eighth place in long jump with 13’10”, and Bristol Loudy finishing 10th in shot put and discus.

On the track, freshman Aspen Bieker finished in first place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:06.09.

“We love Aspen’s open-mindedness and humble confidence, and it was fun to see her sneak away with that win,” Hamilton said.

Other first place finishes included Jaylee Schmitz in 100 hurdles with 17.66 and Lindsey Sonderman in the 1500 with 4:48.84.

“The atmosphere of this race is towards the end of the meet, so you usually have a couple of races under your belt,” Sonderman said. “The night with your team cheering you on, everyone is feeling more electric. I think all of that combined makes for a pretty fun race.”

In relays, the 4x400 and 4x800 both came away with second place finishes with the 4x400 featuring Abby Broeckelman, Josie Sonderman, Brylee Schechinger, and Wegner earning a time of 4:26.36 just 11 seconds behind Glenwood who won. The 4x800 that featured Bieker, Schechinger, Sadie Alberti, and Lindsey Sonderman finished with a time of 10:23.88, five seconds behind Glenwood, who won with 10:18.61.

The Cyclones next event will be Thursday at Denison where they will be one of nine schools.

HCHS Boys

The HCHS Cyclones boys track and field team came with a fourth place finish in their first meet of the season at the Carroll Early Bird event with 72 points, 103 behind Glenwood, who won the event with 175. Cyclone Head Coach Sam Brummer said it was a good start.

“We saw some good things,” Brummer said. We knew we weren’t going to necessarily climb up the team rankings because we left a few events open, but we had a lot of extra open spots in some individual events.”

Two Cyclones finished in the top ten in the high jump with Dallas McDowell coming in sixth with 5-08.00 and Foxx Argotsinger right behind him in seventh place with 5-06.00.

“It’s been a long time since we had two guys place in the high jump,” Brummer said. “We’ve always seem to had one, but for us to have two guys in there with pretty good jumps at least for starting spots, it was a good surprise to see two guys get over the bar. We’ll go off that and see where it takes us.”

In the 800 sprint medley relay, Ayden Redmon, Hagen Sorensen, Landon Nihsen, and Sam Shields managed to earn a second place finish with 1:39.23, just two seconds behind Glenwood who won the event with 1:37.37.

“It’s unsure with this much youth and inexperience as we have,” Brummer said. “With this being the first race, you never know how kids are going to react. We’ll definitely continue to work on hand-offs.”

The 4x100 team also took a second place finish with Redmon, Nihsen, Sorenesen, and Jozef Reisz finishing with 45.27 right on the tails of Glenwood, who won with 43.84.

In the 3200 meter run, two Cyclones finished in the top two with Jeffrey Gross winning the event with 10:32.71 and Erik Heslink in second place at 11:06.20.

“We have a good trio of distance runners,” Brummer added. “To go out there the first night and get 1-2. We’ll keep chipping away at times and see where that takes us.”

Redmon took a sixth place finish in the 100 meter dash with 12.11, not far off from the winner, Tristan Ludwig of Glenwood, who ran 11.30. In the 200 meter dash, two Cyclones took top ten finishes with Shields coming in third place with 24.00 and Cade Nelson taking seventh 24.72. The event was won by Victor Cruz of Glenwood with 23.79.

The Cyclones next event will be Thursday at Denison where they will be one of eight schools.

“We’re definitely looking to shuffle some things up,” Brummer said. “It’ll be a tough field of Hawkeye Ten opponents. We won’t be short on competition probably on either side. For us, we’ll go out there and put the best relays and individual events out there as we can and see where the times take us.”
