Cyclone girls soccer season begins with a win

The HCHS girls soccer team opened their season Monday night at home with a 4-3 win over the Panorama Panthers.

“Panorama is always a tough team to face, especially early in the season,” said Cyclone Head Coach Jared Boysen. “They usually possess the ball really well and have been tough to score on in the past. They had one of the top goal scorers in the state returning in Morgan Crees that we knew we were going to have to stop.”

The Cyclones opened the first half scoring the first three goals, two of which came from Senior Aubrey Schwieso.

“We came out strong in the first half with Carly Torneton getting the ball through the middle to Aubrey for two goals in the first ten minutes and got us off to the start we needed,” Boysen said.

Boysen was happy to see another goal from a new addition to the team.

“Freshman Abbie Anderson got her first varsity goal in the middle of the first half on a great shot from the top of the box,” he said.

With a 3-goal lead at halftime, Boysen told the team Panorama wasn’t going to go away quietly.

“I told them at halftime they weren't going to quit and could score goals quickly, so we needed to finish the second half strong even with a 3-goal lead,” he added.

The Cyclones were able to score right away to open the second half with another goal from Schwieso, her third of the game. However, the Panthers slowly chipped away at the Cyclones lead getting three goals before the game concluded, all courtesy of Junior Morgan Crees.

Cyclones get blanked at home by Cardinals

Less than 24 hours after a battle with Panorama, the HCHS Cyclones girls soccer team returned to Merrill Field for a matchup with the Treynor Cardinals dropping the game 3-0 for their first loss of the season. Cyclone Head Coach Jared Boysen said the team isn’t in “game shape” yet.

“They kept battling,” he said. “They didn’t quit. When they [Treynor] got two early goals, we could’ve just let up, but we kept battling and playing.”

Just over the midway point of the first half, the Cardinals got two goals within a 90-second span of each other from Junior Ellie Kinsella and Sophomore Kenner Eblen.

“They [Treynor] sent so many people forward,” Boysen said. “They had seven or eight girls all running on the ball. We had a couple of mistakes on the backside. We have to try to go on the other side because when it comes through, it’s an easy one. I think we learned from that and got better as we went.”

In the second half of the game, the Cardinals were able to add one more goal courtesy of Freshman Stella Sornson. The Cyclones return to action Thursday, hosting the Carroll Tigers who went 2-16 last season. The Tigers were led by Senior Parker Adams with six goals, Senior Paige Potthoff with six assists, and Sophomore Marin Overmohle with 280 saves.

“We saw them at the scrimmage,” Boysen added. “We’ll watch some film and see what we can learn from. We’ll be ready to go Thursday.”
