Cyclone netters finish 2-4 in home tournament

HARLAN (Aug. 28) -- Harlan Community struggled to find the win column during Saturday’s 11-team Cyclone Volleyball Invitational, losing its first four matches before finishing with two lopsided wins and placing ninth overall.
HCHS finished fifth in Pool A with a 1-4 record after sweeping Underwood 21-18, 21-9, then carried that momentum into its final game and handled Logan-Magnolia - the fifth-place team from Pool B - 21-11, 21-9.
The Cyclones took a 5-4 overall record into Tuesday night’s Hawkeye Ten Conference opener at Denison-Schleswig.
“Those last two games, that was an awesome team to watch. It was just fun to see them play together and really jell,” said first-year HCHS head coach Elle Crees.
“The biggest thing that really will change the name of our game is energy. Energy wins games, and we found it those last two and volleyball looked a little easier for them... Energy and effort - once they put it together we were hammering some balls.”
Treynor won the tournament championship Saturday, going 4-1 in Pool A and then beating Pool B winner Missouri Valley 21-14, 21-12. Indianola also went 4-1 in Pool A but lost its cross-over final vs. Glenwood, 2-1, in a matchup of state-ranked 4A teams.
The Cyclones were competitive in defeat in their first two games of the day, falling to Tri-Center in three sets (19-21, 21-11, 5-15) and dropping two close sets to Treynor (20-22, 19-21). They struggled in their next two games vs. Indianola (10-21, 11-21) and Sidney (18-21, 17-21).
