Cyclones compete at indoor meet at Central College

The HCHS Cyclones girls track and field team competed at the Central College Indoor putting up some strong performances.

“It’s a 200 meter track with tight curves, but it’s a nice 4-class meet where we get to see great competitions from all across the state,” said Cyclone Head Coach Jenny Hamilton. “Our field events started off strong, with Bristol [Loudy] throwing a high 26 in the shot and Aubree [Wegner] clearing 4’8” on her first attempt in the high jump.”

In other field events, Sophomore Brinley Van Baale competed in long jump where she jumped 13’ 3.25”.

On the track, Wegner was the fastest Cyclone in the 200m, taking 79th overall with a time of 29.50. Paige Sonderman was right behind her with 29.97 finishing 95th overall, along with Abby Broeckelman finishing 119th with a time of 30.36.

In the 400m, Kerrigan Kruse finished 52nd overall with a time of 1:12.04, with Ashlyn Rau finishing ninth in the 800m with 2:37.54.

Lindsey Sonderman has started off the season strong in long distance events, taking second place in the 1500m with 4:54.20, finishing just two seconds behind the winner, Chloe Glosser of Pekin, who won with 4:52.04. Cyclone Sophomore Ava Freund also competed in the 1500 finishing with 5:38.53 taking 17th overall.

“Ava ran a great 1500 cutting 10 seconds from her fastest time last season,” Hamilton said. “Kerrigan gave great effort in the open 400.”

In relays, the teams competed strong, with the 4x200 team featuring Ellerie Nelson, Claire Bieker, Sophia Freund, and Ainsley Mages taking 21st overall with 2:04.56. Roland Story won the event with 1:50.04.

The 4x400 team of Wegner, Paige, Lindsey, and Broeckelman finished fifth at 4:25.75. Ankeny Centennial won the event with 4:14.06. The 4x800 race, featuring Allie Anderson, Aspen Bieker, Sadie Alberti, and Rau finished third overall with a time of 10:34.38. Pella won the 4x800 beating out the Cyclones by 22 seconds with 10:12.11.

“Our 4x8 cut 30 seconds from last week earning a 3rd place finish amongst great competition,” Hamilton added. “We were able to run two 4x4 relays. Our A squad cut two seconds from last week, and all eight runners were under 70 seconds.”

The Cyclones will be back in action for their first outdoor meet Thursday at Carroll Athletic Stadium featuring seven other schools.
