Cyclones defeat Monarchs in extra innings

The HCHS varsity baseball team battled the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs on their home turf and defeated them in extra innings, 8-4.

The Cyclones bats were hot as they collected 14 hits throughout the night, including eight different players on the roster who had at least one hit.

“We swung the bats really good against Glenwood and they continued it last night,” said HCHS Head Baseball Coach Heath Stein. “We put together some stretches of good swings and creating runs and putting pressure on the defense.”

Junior Cael Goshorn got the ball for the Cyclones as he pitched 5.2 innings and struck out seven. He came away with a no-decision on the night despite a positive performance.

“I would say that was one of his better outings,” he said. “He was throwing to a pretty tough strike zone sometimes. He kept his composure well given the circumstances and he really did a nice job.”

With this win, it puts the Cyclones record at 12-5-1. As a team, they are batting .302 on the season after 17 games played. Stein gave credit to his team as a whole for how they perform each and every night.

“I’d say it’s a pretty cohesive unit,” he added. “They all get along really well and hang out outside of baseball. I think they enjoy coming to the yard and working on their craft.”

Their next match will take place on the road against the Kuemper Catholic Knights, 11-9 at 7:30 p.m. Last time they played the Knights, senior Alex Monson delivered a complete game shutout in which they won, 5-0.

“Kuemper is always tough and when you play them on their home field, they’re always even a little bit tougher,” Stein added. “Braydon Ernst is getting the ball tomorrow. We expect another good outing from Braydon.”
