Cyclones earn split with Lewis Central behind Bruck pitching, 16 hits

Baseball: HCHS 12, Lewis Central 6

COUNCIL BLUFFS (July 1) -- If Monday’s game serves as an omen for the rest of the month, another fun July could be in store for Harlan Community baseball.
Entering the final two and a half weeks of the regular season, HCHS put together one of its most complete games of the year at Lewis Central Monday morning, racking up 16 hits and playing error-free defense in a 12-6 win over the Hawkeye Ten-leading Titans.
The fifth-ranked Cyclones were one out away from a 10-0 victory when LC plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth off Harlan’s Connor Bruck, who took a two-hit shutout into the inning.
HCHS scored two runs in the top of the seventh and Lewis Central added four off reliever Tyler Schaben in the bottom half, finishing with six doubles in the last two frames.
The Cyclones improved to 19-4 overall and 13-4 in the conference, earning a season split with the Titans, who remained in first place at 18-8 and 15-2, respectively.
HCHS got to LC starter Easton Dermody for 11 hits and eight runs (five earned) in five innings. When the two teams met on June 3, the hard-throwing Dermody struck out all three Cyclones he faced to close out a 3-1 LC win.
“Offensively it was by far our best game of the year as a team, and to do it against Dermody hopefully says a lot about how much we have improved since the first time we faced him,” said HCHS head coach Steve Daeges.
Bruck (6-0) allowed five hits and two earned runs in six innings, walking two, hitting a batter and striking out six.
Bruck and Luke Schaben both hit their first varsity home run and had four RBI on the day, each going 3-for-5 and combining to score five times. Derec Weyer also had three hits and drove in a pair.
Schaben was all about extra bases, hitting a two-run triple in the first, a two-run homer in the fourth and a double in the sixth. Bruck singled in each of the first two innings, hit an RBI ground out in the fourth and capped his day with a two-run long ball in the seventh.
