Cyclones fall to DC-G on last-second punt return

O.T. averted as Trey Washington’s 79-yard runback with :02 left sends Mustangs past HCHS, 28-21

HARLAN -- With 22.5 seconds remaining, there was likely just one thing that would have prevented Friday night’s Harlan Community vs. Dallas Center-Grimes game from going into an overtime that seemed imminent.
 And then it happened.
Fielding a Cyclone punt on one bounce near the 20, DC-G junior Trey Washington raced 79 yards through traffic for the game-winning score with :02 left on the clock, giving the ninth-ranked (3-A) Mustangs a thrilling 28-21 victory over No. 5 HCHS at Merrill Field.
Playing a bit shorthanded due to injuries, the Cyclones rallied to tie the score three times on the night - including Curtis Schnack’s three-yard touchdown run with 3:50 remaining - but had little chance to answer Washington’s weaving, tackle-breaking return.
HCHS tried to lateral the ball following DC-G’s squib kickoff, but losts its third fumble of the game as time expired.
The gut-wrenching finish put a damper on an otherwise solid performance by the Cyclones, who fell to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in District 8 going into this Friday’s 7 p.m. game at Atlantic (1-3, 0-2).
