Cyclones finish off Trojans in first game; drop second game

The HCHS varsity softball team resumed a game they started against the Atlantic Trojans on June 7th that was cut short due to harsh weather conditions and hung on to win 2-1.

“It was a new day, so we had to make sure that we came in as focused as we were when we were in Atlantic,” said HCHS Head Softball Coach Toshia Kasperbauer. “I think the girls were ready to finish that game and they had to stay tough to finish it.”

In game two, the Cyclones were not as fortunate as the Trojans came out swinging some hot bats, including scoring eight runs in the second inning and six runs in the third inning.

“Once they got a couple hits, then they just continued up and down the line up with that momentum,” Coach Kasperbauer said. “There were two or three innings with no runs scored, but unfortunately they had a couple beginnings that they were able to put a lot of runs on the board.”

The Cyclones managed to fight back a little to make the game interesting towards the end, but still lost, 16-10.

“I was glad to see them not give up,” she added. “It is tough to look at the scoreboard and know that you are down 14-1 and they dug their nose in deeper and fought harder and put runs on the board.”

With the final stretch of the season approaching before the playoffs, the Cyclones will start off next week with a doubleheader against the Shenandoah Mustangs, 9-16, who have lost six in a row.

“We have five games and four of those games are conference games,” she said. “Shenandoah has had some upsets in the Hawkeye Ten, so we are going to have to stay locked in.”
