Cyclones hand Eagles its third loss

“Matt is doing a nice job making some adjustments.” -Heath Stein, HCHS Head Baseball Coach

The HCHS varsity baseball team (21-7) took on the Underwood Eagles (20-2) at home on Friday and shut them down, 6-1.

Senior Alex Monson got the ball to start the game for the Cyclones. He pitched just one inning and gave up a run. Freshman Weston Reisz came in for the final six innings of the game, not allowing a run.

“That was our plan to get Alex a little bullpen tune-up before postseason starts, and the plan was to go to Weston and see how long he could go,” said HCHS Head Baseball Coach Heath Stein. “He did a really good job mixing pitches and throwing 0-0 strikes to get ahead and working off that.”

The first four innings, the Cyclones bats were quiet and then in the fifth inning, sophomore Matthew Sorfonden knocked in the first run with an RBI single to center field. He later hit his first home run of the year in the sixth inning.

“Matt is doing a nice job making some adjustments,” Coach Stein said. “He’s a hard worker, he’s a good kid. I’m happy for him and the success he’s having.”

The Cyclones will have the weekend off before they return to action on Tuesday against the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs (19-14) at 7:30 p.m. on the road.

“We’ll have a couple of games before we get to postseason against good competition,” he said. “Hopefully we see some quality arms and just keeping working on things that we need to work on and get ready to go.”
