Cyclones handle Rams, cap impressive 4-0 start

HCHS finishes tough non-district slate with 41-13 win

GLENWOOD (Sept. 17) -- The Harlan Community football team has passed its early-season gauntlet with flying colors.
The top-ranked (3A) Cyclones improved to 4-0 on Friday night with a businesslike 41-13 win at Glenwood (2-2).
HCHS junior quarterback Teagon Kasperbauer threw two touchdown passes to Jacob Birch and one to Connor Frame, Aidan Hall scored on runs of 14 and 23 yards and Stephen Leinen kicked his first two field goals of the year from 42 and 20.
The Cyclones, who led 31-6 at halftime, forced six three-and-outs defensively and had a pair of takeaways on first-half interceptions by Wil Neuharth and Ashton Lyon.
They will now set their focus on the start of district play and Friday night’s Homecoming game against Saydel (0-4) at Merrill Field.
The Cyclones’ four non-district wins came against a pair of top-five ranked opponents in Lewis Central and Sergeant Bluff-Luton and two teams that received at least one vote in last week’s Iowa prep football AP poll (Glenwood and Grinnell).
Head coach Todd Bladt was pleased with his team’s improving offensive balance vs. the Rams as HCHS rushed for 161 yards on 28 carries and passed for 210 with a completion ratio of 15-for-23.
“We figured some things out against what they were trying to do [defensively] and we were able to take advantage of it,” Bladt said.
“We actually ran the ball quite a few more times than we threw the ball tonight. Any time you have a balanced offense it’s really hard to take away one thing... They started taking one thing away and then we’d start doing something else. It’s always a game of chess, and we kind of put the pawns in the right place tonight.”
