Cyclones have big goals for upcoming season

The HCHS Cyclones girls soccer team is back on the pitch to prepare for the upcoming season.
“I can’t wait to start the season, and see what this group of girls can do together,” said Junior Emercyn Reischl.
Last year, the team finished 10-8, losing 2-0 in Regional Play. After losing four seniors, Boysen will be looking to other girls for leadership.
“We will miss having the seniors from last year, especially Hailey [Good] as she played wherever we needed her throughout her career, including filling in at goalie when needed,” said Cyclone Head Coach Jared Boysen. “We will need to fill the void of her scoring, as she really stepped up in that area for us when we needed it last year. We do have a lot of experience returning from last year in key positions both on offense and defense.”
During the 2024 season, the Cyclones suffered some tough losses to Panorama, St. Albert, Treynor, Underwood, and others.
“They've always been very solid teams and are very strong on offense,” said Junior Carly Torneten. “However, we have a lot of new players that will help us grow on both ends of the field and will put us in a good position to compete with those teams. Our main focus will be to identify their key players and shut them down early, as well as being creative on offense and moving their defense around.”
The Cyclones’ top scorers last season were Aubrey Schwieso with 18 goals, Kayla Anderson with 12, Torneten with 10, along with Kassie Anderson and Ivy Stevens both with two. Torneten led the team in assists with 10, and goalkeeper Grace Albertsen had 116 saves.
“Aubrey Schwieso was our leading scorer last year with 18 goals after setting the school record with 30 goals the season before,” Boysen said. “We will continue to look to get her the ball in space as she does a great job of scoring off the through ball in 1v1 situations. Kayla, who tied the school record with 10 assists 2 years ago, stepped up in scoring last year with 12 goals and 7 assists adding to her career assist total. We will look for her to continue scoring and getting great crosses into the middle this year. Carly Torneten tied that same assist record last year with 10 assists as well as scoring 10 goals filling in for Ivy Stephens on offense. She does a great job of maneuvering through the defense and making great passes.”
The Cyclones season will begin March 26 with a Jamboree, followed by a game two days later against the AHSTW Vikings. Last season, the Vikings went 2-12 with wins against Greene County and Riverside. The Vikings were led by Halle Goodman with nine goals, Claire Mertz with three assists, and Saydi Paulsen with 77 saves.
