Cyclones hit 10-of-19 treys, complete sweep of Denison

DENISON (Jan. 28) -- The Harlan Community boys surged ahead with a timely 14-4 second-half run and held off Denison-Schleswig’s late rally to beat the Monarchs 54-48 Tuesday night and sweep the season series.
The game did not count in the Hawkeye Ten standings as HCHS won the conference matchup 68-60 in overtime December 13.
The Cyclones are now 10-4 overall and 7-0 in the H-10 while the Monarchs are 9-5 and 4-3, respectively.
HCHS made 10-of-19 three-pointers Tuesday and held D-S standout guard Charlie Wiebers to eight points until he broke loose for 11 (three treys and two free throws) in the final 90 seconds.
Connor Bruck scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the second half for Harlan, shooting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Michael Erlemeier (10 points), Johnathan Monson (eight) and Brad Curren (six) each made 2-of-3 treys.
“We had a lot of people step up at different times,” stated HCHS coach Mitch Osborn, who notched career win number 699.
HCHS switched to its delay game with 4:19 left - up 45-37 - and made enough free throws to hold on despite missing two front ends of one-and-one.
Will McLaughlin finished his night with 11 rebounds, six points and three blocks while Michael Heithoff added six points as well.
Denison finished with a slight rebounding edge (29-25) but needed Wiebers’ three late hits to finish 6-of-26 from three-point land. In addition to Wiebers’ 19 points, Goanar Biliew scored 12 and Damien Magnuson had 10.
