Cyclones host Creston in district opener July 17

HCHS finished regular season with wins over AL, TJ

HARLAN (July 15) -- The Harlan Community baseball team will ride a six-game winning streak into postseason play following a pair of non-conference home wins earlier this week.
HCHS defeated Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 11-3 on Tuesday night and held off Thomas Jefferson 9-7 on Wednesday, finishing the regular season with a 13-3 record. The Cyclones will return to Jim Goeser Field Friday night when they host Creston (4-9) in a Class 3A district semifinal at 7:00 p.m. The winner will face Denison-Schleswig or Glenwood on Monday night - also set to be played in Harlan.
HCHS head coach Steve Daeges is pleased with how his team is finding ways to win games of late.
“That’s been nice to see. We’ve started to hit the ball a little better and we’ve done a nice job of running bases,” he said. “(Pitcher) Connor (Bruck) has been in a little bit of a groove his last couple outings and (Brenden) Bartley’s been kind of a nice surprise on the mound, so going into the tournament I think we’re in as good of shape as we can be... It’s going to be a tough district for us and we’re looking forward to playing in it.”
Bruck (3-1, 0.95 ERA) will get the ball first against Creston and already has an impressive postseason pitching resume to his credit. He threw an inning against Creston on July 6, allowing two unearned runs in a game the Cyclones won 11-8.
If the Cyclones make it to the Substate 8 final, there is a good chance they will have a rematch with 4th-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes (14-3) on July 22. HCHS beat the Mustangs 5-4 on July 7 but has not yet faced their ace pitcher, Logan Smith, who sports a 6-0 record and 0.40 ERA.
