Cyclones open dual season with home quad sweep

HARLAN (Dec. 10) -- The Harlan Community wrestling team fell just one shy of the school record for dual wins last season by going 25-3.
Hoping to take another shot at that mark in 2019-20, the Cyclones are off to a good start following Tuesday’s home quad sweep of Southwest Iowa (Sidney), St. Albert and Glenwood.
HCHS opened the meet with a 74-6 win vs. Southwest Iowa, then notched Hawkeye Ten Conference wins over the Falcons (70-10) and the Rams (42-31). Glenwood went 2-1 on the night, beating St. Albert (61-10) and Southwest Iowa (65-16). SWI beat the Falcons 45-36.
HCHS head coach John Murtaugh has high hopes for another special dual season this winter and talked about some big goals in the traditional tournaments as well. The Cyclones are able to fill out all 14 weight classes and have some high-quality veterans in the mix.
“We’re one of those teams that has a shot to win the Hawk 10, there’s no doubt about that,” Murtaugh said. “We’d like to do the sweep - Hawkeye Ten, sectionals and districts - and that would certainly be a special year. We want to finish the season winning those three tournaments.”
Ethan Lemon, Nathan Henry and Jesse Schwery all recorded three pins for the Cyclones Tuesday and six of their teammates went either 3-0 or 2-0. Sophomore Luke Freund recorded a pin and a technical fall in his only two contested matches at 113, Luke Musich (120) had two pins and a major decision and Dalton McKinley (145) had two pins and a hard-fought 9-8 win over Southwest Iowa’s Colton Hauschild.
HCHS trailed Glenwood 25-24 in the final round of the meet when the Cyclones’ “murderer’s row” of Carter Bendorf (182), Henry (195) and Jesse Schwery (220) secured the victory with three straight wins by fall.
Overall, HCHS scored bonus points in 22 of its 23 match wins, including 20 pins.
