Cyclones rally past Rams after rain delay

GLENWOOD (June 18) -- Harlan Community responded to a one-hour rain delay with seven runs in the fifth and got four solid innings of relief pitching from junior Trey Gross Thursday afternoon to top Glenwood 11-5 in Hawkeye Ten baseball action.
The 10th-ranked (Class 3A) Cyclones finished the opening week of the season with a 2-1 record - overall and in conference play - while the Rams dropped to 1-1.
Glenwood led 4-2 in the home half of the third when a thundershower delayed the contest for nearly an hour. It was all Cyclones the rest of the way, however, keyed by a seven-run outburst in the top of the fifth.
After eighth-grader Franz Reisz and freshman Teagon Kasperbauer struggled to throw strikes in their HCHS varsity pitching debuts, Gross (1-0) settled things down with four innings of two-hit ball. He allowed one run, walked zero and struck out five.
Offensively, the Cyclones were led by the top three batters in the lineup as Connor Bruck (one double) and Joey Moser both had three hits and Brenden Bartley added a pair. They combined to score six runs, steal four bases and drive in four.
Eleven Cyclones came to the plate in the fifth as five singles, two walks and a hit batsman turned a two-run deficit into a 9-4 lead against Glenwood relief pitcher Chad Fisher.
The Cyclones added two insurance runs in the seventh as Bruck doubled and scored on a Moser single and Gross drew a bases-loaded walk.
